Many eBay sellers create their own product to sell on eBay. Some sell their own crafts and artwork, while others produce specialized software programs or other information resources. Because you are the manufacturer and totally control the cost and selling price of your product, this can be very lucrative.

Software is a huge seller on eBay. Think about it. Every eBay user owns a computer. If you wrote a highly specialized application, you would have a difficult time selling it to a software company. They are not interested in a product unless it can sell millions. But you could probably make a lot of money selling a few hundred or a few thousand copies on eBay and the other auction sites. For instance, the Pokemon collecting software has been very popular (although there is so much of it around, the price has fallen drastically).

People collect everything, though. Just look at the collectibles selling on eBay and write a data base software program to help people keep track of and price their collectibles. Even if you can’t write software, you can often hire a programmer to create a simple software program for you. A good programmer can create a basic collecting program for just a few hundred dollars that you could use to potentially earn thousands of dollars.

Or consider creating custom collectible price guides and selling them online. Although most of the major collectibles have price guides published by the major publishing houses, small, more niche-type collectibles or cult items rarely have a large-enough following to attract major publishers. If you are familiar with such a niche, this is an opportunity to write a price guide or create a database program you can sell to collectors on eBay. Databases can be highly profitable because you can deliver your products electronically at very little cost or effort.

Computer games are also big. The latest and hottest games are available from the master distributors, but you will probably not realize the same price discounts that major retailers get and so won’t be able to turn a decent profit. However, slightly older computer games are available very cheaply from close out and surplus dealers.

Having warned you about the risks of following a fad, I must point out that eBay fortunes have been made on Furby toys, Pokemon cards, and Beanie Babies. These are being replaced by Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and SpongeBob.

There is nothing wrong with working the fads if you specialize in these types of products and know where and how to find a steady supply of them. Don’t get caught with a large supply of inventory when the prices start falling.
