If a tile isn’t broken or cracked, you’re in good shape for fixing the floor by securing the loose tiles.
Here’s what you can do to fix loose floor tiles:
- Carefully lift the loose tile with a putty knife, working from center to edges on all four sides. If the tile is 12-x-12, use a stiff spatula-type blade. The tile may feel loose when you walk on it, but that doesn’t mean all the adhesive has broken loose. There still might be a patch holding some part of the tile.
- If you encounter difficulty, don’t force the tile out; it will break. Heat the tile first with a warm iron to loosen the bond.
- When the tile is out, carefully set it aside and then work on removing all remnants of the old adhesive, using mineral spirits. You want the floor absolutely clean before you apply new adhesive. If it’s not, the bond won’t be as strong. It may also make the tile weaker if some of it isn’t as flat as the rest.
- While working on the tile and adhesive, make sure your scraper doesn’t slip and damage surrounding tiles. If you encounter a stubborn spot use the iron again to warm the adhesive, then scrape it out.
- Apply new adhesive to the cleaned-out patch.
- Press the new tile in.
- Clean off any adhesive that seeps through the seams. Look at the manufacturer’s suggestions for cleaning up excess adhesive.
Put some weight the tile by spreading clean cloth or newspaper and something heavier on top, like a book or brick for a day or two until you’re certain the bond can’t be broken.
