Name an item, and someone probably collects it. Did you know, for example, that people collect and pay big money for old eyeglasses? The catch is, where do you find old eyeglasses? You will probably never see them at a garage sale; however, when you are at a garage sale, if the people having the sale are over 50, just ask them if they have any old eyeglasses or even old sunglasses lying around the house. You will be amazed how many people will come up with them. Antique or vintage eyeglasses sell on eBay in the $25 to $200 range.

The same is true of many more collectibles. Everyone knows that Elvis and Beetles memorabilia is highly collectible. The trick is to find the lesser known things that most people don’t think of. I have a friend who sells nothing but old fishing equipment and lures on eBay. He sells over $4,000 a month. That doesn’t sound like much money, but he usually gets a 500 to 1500 percent markup. He can buy an old fishing reel at a garage sale for $5 and sell it on eBay for $75. Other sellers do the same thing with vintage stereo equipment, old golf clubs and tennis rackets, and so on.

There are two keys to success for selling collectibles: knowledge and a good source of supply. You will have to become highly knowledgeable about your particular category of collectibles. Knowledge will help you spot bargains and learn how to accurately describe your items. Collectible buyers appreciate buying from someone who is obviously knowledgeable because it gives them confidence in what they are buying and whom they are buying it from.

Finding a good source of supply for collectibles can be difficult. If you are selling newly manufactured collectibles this is easier because you can buy directly from the manufacturer or distributor. Selling older, out-of-production collectibles is still feasible, but it could be hard to build a large eBay business because you will have to spend a lot of time finding goods to sell.

If you want to sell collectibles on eBay at high volume PowerSeller level, you will have to sell a wide variety because the various collectible categories are too small to support a large-sized business. An exception to this is the sports card and memorabilia business that currently supports dozens of large sellers.

There are some other categories, such as glassware, that can also support a large eBay business, but once again, you will have to do the research to determine which collectible categories are capable of supporting the size business you want to grow to.
