Don’t think that you need to limit yourself to a certain product theme. You can sell anything on eBay if priced right. My rule of thumb is this: if you can price an item for half of the regular price and make a decent profit, then you can sell a ton of them on eBay! Don’t be afraid to sell a mixture of new, used, closeout, liquidated, information product, etc.
Your business and product ideas are limited only by your imagination and, of course, the existence of a market. Whatever you decide to sell, become an expert at it. Read up on your products, talk to other merchants and collectors, research your competition, learn something about the history of your product, and study the manufacturers. Knowing your product category in depth will pay many dividends down the road.
Never sell a product you aren’t enthusiastic about. If you don’t believe in what you’re selling, and you aren’t willing to stand behind your product, your online business will certainly fail. If you wouldn’t buy the product for yourself, or strongly recommend it to a friend or family member, then do not sell it on eBay. You might sell a few, but in the end you will not build a long-term business.
There is no question that some products sell better than others do. Computer products and software are particularly hot sellers because almost all computer users are pre-qualified for those products. In other words, the fact people are buying on eBay means they own a computer. Using a computer means they need hardware and/or software. Therefore, almost anyone buying on eBay is a potential customer for computer hardware, software, or accessories.
There is also a huge market on eBay for anything kitchen-related items on eBay. After all, everyone cooks at least occasionally. Cooking and gourmet related items are a huge market on eBay, and some sellers even sell specialty foods.
Sometimes the best products are the obscure or less obvious ones. Sports cards and collectibles are sold by thousands of eBay sellers. That is the problem. There are so many sellers with essentially the same merchandise that it drives the price down and you cannot make a decent margin. However, if you look deep within this popular category, you can find the money-making products.
